We are getting hitched

The dates are 14th & 16th of July '21 and we would like you to be a part of it.

How we met

No, I did not serenade her with soulful music played on a guitar, though how I wish I had. I don't even know how to play it, the picture is just to make me look cool.
I first saw her when she joined as a newcomer in Cognizant sitting diagonally opposite me, we were introduced by a colleague of ours. It was not love at first sight, in fact we were quite the opposites. Our neighbor-ly chats blossomed into friendly evening tea strolls which eventually ended in lakeside walks and us realizing that we were not so different after all. So here we are, almost five years down the line, sitting across continents amidst a pandemic and planning a wedding.

Events

14th July

Gaye Holud (গায়ে হলুদ) 10AM - 1PM

The ceremony starts at the groom’s house, where turmeric paste mixed with milk, water and mustard oil is applied on the groom’s body. The remaining paste, is then sent to the bride’s house along with gifts(তত্ত্ব). The ceremony is then performed at the bride’s house in a similar fashion.

Wedding (বিয়ে) 7PM - 12AM

This is the main event in the entire wedding when the bride and the groom tie the knot. The groom comes with his family and friends(বর যাত্রী) and is greeted by the bride's family. This is when the couple circle the sacred fire as per Vedic Prajapatya marriage rituals and are finally declared husband and wife.

16th July

Bou Bhaat (বউ ভাত) 1PM-3PM

The bride cooks some dishes for her husband and the family. This is known as the bou-bhaat. The husband hands over a saree and a plate of food to his wife, pledging to take care of her throughout his life. This Bengali wedding ceremony is called bhaat kapor(ভাত কাপড়). This ceremony usually happens in the afternoon.

Reception 7PM-11PM

The Reception is thrown by the groom's side to welcome and introduce the bride to his family and friends. There are not many rituals associated with this. The Bride's family and friends(কনে যাত্রী) are also invited and they join the festivities.

A picture is worth a thousand words!
